A group of scientists at the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology have created a new scale (and process for weighing) that dramatically increases the accuracy of weight measurements.
Their new scale, which uses short nanotubes at very low temperatures, was able to measure the vibration of items down to a single yoctogram, or one septillionth of a gram.
A yoctogram is equivalent to 0.000000000000000000000000001 grams.
For some perspective, a single proton weighs 1.7 yoctograms, meaning that this scale could in theory weigh objects down to the proton. The scale could be used in the future for medical diagnostics as well as research.
