Though many people think that the moon is pretty close when they see it in the sky, it is actually verrrrry far away. If you had a golf ball to represent the moon and a softball to represent the Earth, you would have to put them about 30 feet (10 m) apart to match the distance in space (about 240,000 miles or 384403 km apart). This is the reason that even when an asteroid passes between the moon and the Earth, we don’t head for the bunkers.
