The number of people worldwide classified as obese now is larger than the number of people starving worldwide.

Says Bekele Geleta, secretary general of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in their 2011 World Disaster Report focusing on nutrition and hunger:

Now, in 2011, I find it perplexing and dismaying that when there is more food available than ever before, when agricultural yields have increased hugely, when there are 1.5 billion people worldwide classified as obese, 925 million people simply don’t have enough to eat.
